An Arab diplomatic source said today that Ahmed Sharaa, head of the Damascus authority, will not participate in the Arab Summit on Saturday in Baghdad, after the formal invitation to Sharaa was met with strong criticism from prominent Iraqi politicians loyal to Iran and their supporters.

The source told AFP: "Sharaa will not participate in the 34th regular Arab Summit scheduled to be held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on May 17." He noted that "Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani will head his country’s delegation to the summit."

Iraqi security sources told AFP that there is an old arrest warrant against Sharaa in Iraq, dating back to a period when he was a fighter with Al-Qaeda and was imprisoned in Iraq for years as a result.
