The Syrian Interior Ministry confirmed its commitment to announcing the findings of the investigation into the security operation carried out in the town of Rankous in the Qalamoun region of the Damascus countryside. It said the evidence would be presented to the public once legal procedures had been completed. The statement was issued today amid public reactions and questions raised by the operation.

The ministry said it was closely following public reactions to the security operation carried out in the town, which, according to the statement, targeted a cell linked to ISIS. It added that the security force’s primary mission was to execute arrest warrants against several suspects based on intelligence information.

The ministry explained that the security force came under direct gunfire upon arriving at the operation site, resulting in the deaths of two Internal Security Forces personnel and injuries to five others. The force then responded to the sources of fire in accordance with the applicable rules of engagement.

The statement confirmed that preliminary investigations with the detainees were continuing under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities. It added that the ministry remained committed to announcing the investigation findings and presenting the evidence to the public. The ministry also urged the public to verify information, await official findings and avoid being drawn into what it described as misleading narratives.

The statement came hours after dozens of residents staged a protest outside the police station in Rankous following Friday prayers. They called for the circumstances surrounding the security operation carried out in the town at dawn on Thursday to be clarified, the investigation findings to be made public, and those responsible for any violations to be held accountable.

The protesters’ demands focused on the need for transparency in handling the incident and clarification of all details of the operation and the circumstances surrounding it. They stressed the importance of holding any party proven to have committed abuses or legal violations accountable.

Clashes broke out during the security operation carried out by the Internal Security Forces in the town at dawn on Thursday, leaving seven people dead, including two Internal Security Forces personnel and five armed men.
