The Jordanian army said in a statement that "Border Guard forces clashed at dawn on Sunday and in the pre-noon hours with armed groups of smugglers who tried to cross the northern border of the Kingdom" with Syria.

It reported that "one of the Jordanian Border Guard officers was injured, one of the smugglers was killed, and the rest retreated into the Syrian interior."

It also noted the seizure of large quantities of narcotics in addition to weapons, confirming that the seized materials were transferred to the competent authorities.

Jordan has a land border with Syria that extends for 375 kilometers, and the Jordanian army has previously thwarted, arrested and killed dozens of smugglers on the border during the rule of the former regime.
