Siege on Kobani continues as humanitarian aid falls short

Factions affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government have imposed a siege on the city of Kobani since January 20, leading to a severe shortage of basic necessities and the deaths of several children due to a lack of medicine.

Following pressure and appeals from city residents, local institutions, and humanitarian organizations, aid shipments arrived from Northern Kurdistan, Southern Kurdistan, Channel Eight, the Mesopotamia Association, and the United Nations. Despite these efforts, the assistance remains insufficient. Kobani has a population of approximately 600,000, while around 200,000 people have been displaced as a result of attacks by the same factions and are currently residing in 70 shelters within the city.

Aid is first distributed in Kobani through the Social Affairs and Labor Committee of the Euphrates Canton, after which teams deliver it to villages, door to door.

Ongoing Aid Distribution to Residents

In this context, the Co-Chair of the Social Affairs and Labor Authority in the Euphrates Canton, Ahmed Khoja, stated: “We are working to deliver aid, including sugar, rice, infant formula, and other essentials, to every household. We are also distributing diesel fuel to residents through a card system.”

Khoja affirmed that the distribution of assistance to Kobani residents is continuing according to the available conditions. He added: “At present, we are distributing aid to city residents. After that, we will head to the villages to distribute assistance there. The distribution is ongoing. As long as aid is available, we will continue delivering it so that our people do not face hardships alone.”

In conclusion, Khoja called on relevant parties to act, stating: “The siege on Kobani must be lifted so that people can live in safety and peace.”
