In a statement to the media, Qaraman said that “the policies targeting the indigenous population of Afrin—through attempts to alter the region’s identity and impose a new demographic reality—represent a dangerous continuation of efforts to uproot people from their homeland and erase their cultural and social identity.”

She added that what is happening today in Afrin constitutes a violation of Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which stipulates that “everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others, and no one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.”

She noted that such actions also contravene the principles of international humanitarian law, which prohibit the forced displacement of civilians or the seizure of their property during times of conflict.

The Co-Chair stressed that the return of Afrin’s displaced residents to their homes is a fundamental human right that cannot be nullified by time, and a national duty that all relevant parties must ensure and facilitate in safety and dignity, free from any threat or discrimination.

She further noted that the current situation constitutes “a clear violation of the March 10 Agreement and a breach of national understandings that should safeguard the rights of all Syrians without exception.” Qaraman emphasized that building a new Syria can only be achieved through mutual recognition of rights and a peace grounded in justice, citizenship, and equality.

She concluded her statement by saying: “Just as Kobani blossomed in the face of terrorism, Afrin and all Syrian cities will flourish again with freedom and dignity that cannot be subdued. The voice of Afrin will remain as steadfast as the roots of its olive trees, reminding the world that rights never die as long as there are people who stand for them.”
