SDC's Hassan Mohammed Ali calls for transitional justice and accountability in Syria

Amid the political transformations taking place in Syria, calls are increasing for the establishment of a transitional phase founded on justice and national partnership, ensuring the resolution of the consequences of years of war and paving the way for a new stage of political and social stability.

In this context, Hassan Mohammed Ali, Co-chair of the Public Relations Office of the Syrian Democratic Council, stated that the transitional phase constitutes a fundamental basis for a sustainable stage politically, socially, and economically, but requires the realization of transitional justice.

He explained that the violations and conflicts experienced by Syrians for more than a decade cannot be overcome without genuine justice that does fairness to victims and restores rights to their owners, to be followed by social justice that guarantees equality among all Syrians.

He added that “achieving transitional justice, holding those involved in violations accountable, and compensating those harmed requires the formation of specialized and independent committees working according to clear legal foundations, alongside intensified national efforts to determine the nature of Syria’s future political system in line with the aspirations of all Syrians.”

He pointed out that Syrian national forces are today required to present their opinions and political visions regarding the shape of the new Syria and to accurately assess the current reality in order to reach a post-transition stage that guarantees stability and prevents the recurrence of previous crises.

Mohammed Ali noted that “the current phase is a stage for Syrian reunification and healing the wounds left by years of war and conflict, and it is a foundational phase for reaching a stable and prosperous Syria.”

He affirmed that responsibility for the success of this phase lies with both the interim government and the Syrian national forces, including all components and sects.

He explained that “dealing with the transitional phase with national responsibility is essential, because the failure of this phase could lead the country into a new state of chaos and instability. The success of the phase is a collective responsibility that requires not remaining silent about mistakes, while highlighting weaknesses and presenting appropriate solutions and remedies.”

During his remarks, Hassan Mohammed Ali criticized the performance of the interim government, considering that “its actions are still inexperienced and marked by many mistakes, which raises concerns and fears among Syrian components and reinforces the belief that such practices will not lead to building a new Syria in the required manner.”

He stressed that the coming phase requires the development of clear policies and strategies during the transitional period, in preparation for a comprehensive conference for national and democratic forces, which would represent an essential step toward holding genuine elections that express the will of Syrians.

In conclusion, Hassan Mohammed Ali emphasized that the current transitional phase has confirmed several key realities, most notably “the impossibility of returning to the pre-2011 period, the impossibility of resolving Syrian issues through military solutions, and that Syrian society does not accept the logic of victor and defeated, because all Syrians have paid the price of war and suffered from its consequences. Therefore, everyone must be genuine partners in building the new Syria that Syrians aspire to.”
