SDC: There is no solution to economic crisis in Syria without comprehensive political reform

SDC stated that Syria is facing a deep economic and living crisis that threatens social stability, warning that the continuation of the current political and economic approach exacerbates the collapse and pushes more Syrians towards poverty and migration. The SDC stressed that comprehensive political reform opens the way for all Syrians to participate in shaping the future of their country and is the essential entry point for addressing the crisis.

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) issued a statement expressing its deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating living and economic conditions in Syria. This deterioration is accompanied by an unprecedented expansion of poverty and destitution, a collapse in citizens' purchasing power, and soaring prices that have become unbearable for most Syrians. Meanwhile, basic services are declining, opportunities for a decent life are eroding, and a general sense of hopelessness and despair is growing.

The statement asserted that what Syrians are experiencing today is not merely a passing economic crisis, but rather a direct result of a closed political structure and a persistent failure to implement genuine reforms in governance and the economy. This has rendered the country hostage to short-sighted policies based on monopolies, the prioritization of narrow interests, the marginalization of competent individuals, and the exclusion of society from participating in determining its own destiny.

The SDC believes that the continuation of this approach will exacerbate the collapse, undermine what remains of the foundations of social resilience, and push more Syrians toward emigration, thus threatening the national fabric and deepening social divisions.

The statement stressed that no economic solution can succeed in the absence of serious political reform that ensures the restoration of institutions, establishes a transparent legal environment, and puts an end to corruption and impunity, noting that a sound economy needs a state of law and public trust that cannot be built without genuine political participation and guarantees of equal citizenship

The Syrian Democratic Council expressed its full support for the legitimate and peaceful people’s protests demanding a solution to the economic and living crisis in the country, and stressed that the true path out of the crisis lies in:

Launching a comprehensive political reform process that opens the way for all Syrians to participate in shaping their country's future.

Rebuilding state institutions on the foundations of citizenship, competence, and independence, free from the dominance of the ruling power and centers of influence.

Adopting fair and transparent economic policies that redirect resources toward productive sectors and essential services.

Developing urgent social protection plans for the most vulnerable groups, ensuring a minimum level of human dignity.

Combating systemic corruption, which is one of the most significant causes of economic collapse and the obstruction of development.

Creating the necessary national environment for a comprehensive and sustainable political solution that puts an end to the state of conflict and fragmentation.

The Syrian Democratic Council believes that the dignity of Syrians and their right to a safe and dignified life cannot remain hostage to postponement or compromise. It noted that the crisis has reached a point where further denial or procrastination is no longer acceptable, and any delay in initiating fundamental reforms will only increase the cost of collapse for both society and the state.

The statement added that Syria today needs a unified national will that restores the meaning of the state as a framework for citizenship and justice, not an instrument of domination and exclusion, and a new national project that reconnects politics with society, the economy with justice, and the state with its people.
