The Media Center of the Syrian Democratic Council published a statement issued by the Council, on the 6th anniversary of the start of the attack by the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries on Afrin, which read:

“January 20 this year marks the sixth anniversary of the start of the Turkish aggression against the Syrian region of Afrin, after it occupied Jarabulus, Azaz, and Al-Bab from northern Syria in an attempt by the Turkish occupier to destroy and tear Syria apart.

Turkish warplanes invaded the skies of Afrin and poured the lava of their bombs and missiles on safe civilians, destroying their homes, institutions, schools, roads and bridges.

The Turkish occupation turned the Afrin region into a hotbed for terrorist factions loyal to it, after it displaced more than 250,000 people from the indigenous Kurdish population, resettled the families of the factions loyal to it and those recruited from other provinces, and built model settlement villages under humanitarian and relief names and with the funds of regional countries.

During these past six years, the Afrin region and its remaining indigenous residents have lived through the worst conditions, as a result of the practices of the Turkish occupier and the factions loyal to it, including killing, kidnapping, rape, theft of property, burning and cutting down agricultural land and trees, destroying antiquities and historical sites, and stealing their contents, in addition to imposing humiliating living conditions.

We at the Syrian Democratic Council condemn the Turkish occupation of the Syrian region in Afrin and the rest of the occupied areas in northern Syria, we call on the international community, represented by the UN Security Council, the European Union and the Arab League to play its role and work to end the Turkish occupation, remove the factions loyal to it and bring them before international courts, secure a dignified return for the indigenous Kurdish population.

We affirm to local and international public opinion that the continuation of Turkey and its aggressive policies and this rampant and destructive evil towards Syria and its people reduces the chances of the success of a political solution in accordance with International Resolution 2254 and seriously undermines the purposes of the humanitarian meeting in preserving inherent human dignity, preserving justice and spreading peace.

We direct our speech to Syrians with their various orientations and affiliations, and despite the disagreement over many issues, files, and entitlements over their importance, they require the necessity of accelerating and working in the spirit of inclusive national responsibility and starting a national dialogue that leads to resolving the Syrian crisis and blocks the way for those lurking in the unity of Syria and its people.
