The General Council of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) issued a statement to the public today on the occasion of the party’s 22nd anniversary.

In its statement, the PYD commemorated all the martyrs of the party and the martyrs of freedom, who, through their resistance and historic sacrifices, safeguarded the values and legacy of the people and the party, illuminating the path of political and national democratic struggle. The party congratulated its members, militants, the resisting people, and all components of Syria.

The PYD renewed its pledge “to continue the path of struggle until fulfilling the will of the martyrs and achieving the people’s aspirations to build a free democratic society and a republic where freedom and equality prevail among all components.”

The party recalled that its founding came during difficult political and security circumstances under the Baathist regime, which was marked by “policies of denial, exclusion, repression, and arbitrary arrests of members and supporters.” It described the announcement of the party as “a bold and significant step, a strong response to those authoritarian policies.”

The statement noted that the party overcame that phase thanks to “adherence to its principles and the resistance of martyrs in prisons and outside them, such as Shilan and her comrades, Ustadh Osman, Abu Jodi, Isa Hesso, and Muneeja, while the fate of Nazli Kacel remains unknown to this day. The martyrs of March 12 are also clear proof of our party’s history and its genuine path full of achievements and victories.”

The PYD explained that at the start of the Syrian crisis it adopted the policy of the “third line,” which it considered “the key to the success of the revolution in which all segments of society, along with women’s and youth organizations, took part.” This, it said, led to the establishment of “the Autonomous Administration as a modern model for a new, pluralistic, and decentralized Syria.”

While pointing out that the fall of the regime came as a result of the sacrifices of all Syrians, the party criticized the practices of “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which has become the transitional government at present.” It argued that in the coastal region and in Sweida, those practices inflicted deep wounds on Syrian society—wounds that “continue to bleed as long as the perpetrators of crimes remain unaccountable.”

The statement stressed: “Our efforts will continue on the political and peaceful path of struggle. Dialogue and peace are the keys to resolving all pending issues. Greater efforts must be exerted to entrench democratic values and safeguard Syria’s territorial unity through drafting a new constitution that guarantees the rights of women and all national components without exclusion, and by forming a transitional government capable of managing the current stage.”

The party also reiterated its commitment to “Kurdish unity of ranks and position” as a historical legacy and achievement. It called on the transitional government to invite the joint Kurdish delegation to Damascus “as a gesture of openness toward a democratic solution,” while rejecting attempts to undermine these efforts.

The PYD pledged to its martyrs and its people: “We will continue on their path, upholding the March 10 Agreement and working for its implementation, as it represents the best solution for Syria’s future.”

The statement concluded by stressing that the coming phase requires political, organizational, and diplomatic responsibilities, along with communication with all Syrian political and social forces to strengthen cohesion and solidarity. It underlined that the “Peace and Democratic Society Initiative” proposed by Leader Abdullah Ocalan represents the path to rescue peoples from “tragedies and international domination driven by economic and political interests.”
