Protests in Damascus, Deir ez-Zor, Hasakah over fuel price hikes

In the capital Damascus, citizens and activists held a protest outside the Parliament building against the continued deterioration of living and economic conditions and in rejection of recent fuel price hikes.

Participants held banners expressing their dissatisfaction with rising living costs and declining essential services, particularly healthcare. They called for greater public participation in decision-making and a review of economic and service policies.

One of the banners read: “After two years of promises… poverty and unemployment are rising, public hospitals are collapsing, and only the bills are soaring,” reflecting what participants described as worsening living and service burdens.

The city of Al-Mayadeen in Deir ez-Zor province also witnessed a sit-in by local dignitaries, during which a statement was read affirming their support for community demands calling for the provision of essential services and improved living conditions for Syrians.

In Hasakah province, several areas witnessed protests and road blockages in rejection of fuel price hikes, with demands to ensure fuel supplies for bakeries and improve living and service conditions.

The city of Amuda also witnessed a protest against fuel price hikes and deteriorating public services, amid continued calls for improved living conditions and essential services.

The protests come amid growing public demands in several parts of Syria following recent economic decisions, which have been accompanied by higher fuel prices and their impact on the costs of living, transportation and services.
