Protest held in Damascus against increase in electricity prices

Citizens organized a protest in Damascus against the increase in electricity prices, demanding a review of the decision and an easing of the living burdens on low-income families, after the issuance of bills with exorbitant amounts.

A protest was held on Thursday in front of the Ministry of Energy building of the Interim Government in Damascus, with a number of citizens participating to reject the decision to raise electricity prices after receiving exorbitant bills.

Syrian activists posted videos of the protest on social media, showing demonstrators gathering in front of the Ministry of Energy building and holding banners denouncing the electricity price hike and demanding its cancellation.

The protesters called for a review of the decision, warning of its impact on living conditions, given declining incomes and rising prices.

The participants urged the relevant authorities to adopt policies that consider citizens' purchasing power and to take measures to alleviate the burden on low-income families.

Protesters pointed out that electricity is only available for a few hours a day. Despite this, they received high bills without meter readers actually reading the consumption, a practice they considered unfair that increases the financial burden on residents.
