Organizations representing political parties in Kobani issued a statement today calling on the Ministry of Higher Education and relevant authorities to preserve Kobani University as an established educational institution in the city.

The statement said: “Organizations representing political parties in Kobani are closely following recent developments concerning the future of Kobani University, particularly the failure to include a number of its colleges, institutes, and departments in the admissions process for the 2026–2027 academic year, as well as reports about reorganizing the university’s status and linking or merging it with Syrian higher education institutions.

Kobani University is not merely an educational institution. Over the past years, it has become an important academic and community institution, providing university education to students from Kobani, its countryside, and surrounding areas. It has hosted thousands of students and graduated generations of professionals in various fields. The university has also expanded its colleges and academic programs in response to the needs of the community and students’ aspirations.

Accordingly, we stress that regulating the university’s legal and academic status should not result in the cancellation of its colleges and departments or the relocation of its programs outside Kobani.

Therefore, organizations representing political parties in Kobani call on the relevant authorities to:

Preserve Kobani University as an established university institution in the city, reinstate all colleges, institutes, and departments that were not included in the 2026–2027 academic year admissions process, and guarantee their continuation without cancellation or relocation outside Kobani.

Give particular attention to programs needed by residents of the region, including the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Law, the Technical Institute and its departments, the Accounting Institute, the Higher Institute of Media, and other existing programs.

They also called for guaranteeing the right of residents of Kobani and its countryside to pursue university education in their city and avoiding imposing the costs of travel, housing, and living in other cities on students, which could prevent some from continuing their higher education. They further called for ensuring that no academic rights are lost as a result of any administrative or legal change in the university’s affiliation.

Include the university administration and academic staff in any discussions concerning the university’s future and preserve the specific character of Kobani University and its academic and cultural role, including the continued development of education, scientific research, and community service, while guaranteeing the rights of students and teaching staff.

From this standpoint, we consider preserving all colleges and departments of Kobani University an educational and community right for the people of the region. We call on the Ministry of Higher Education and relevant authorities to reconsider their decision regarding the university’s future and preserve its colleges and academic programs as an educational institution serving the people of the region. Preserving the university is a shared responsibility.”
