Political Council holds the government responsible for Homs attack

The Political Council of Central and Western Syria announced its condemnation of the attack on the al-Muhajireen neighborhood in Homs, which resulted in one death and 11 injuries.

In an official statement, the Council held "the de facto authorities fully responsible for the acts of reprisal against the residents of the neighborhood, aimed at displacing and terrorizing them."

The statement emphasized that "these actions constitute a violation of international norms and principles, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, precaution, humanity, and military necessity," noting "similar incidents in the Syrian coastal region and Swedia."

The council noted that "Alawite residents are an integral part of Syrian society," emphasizing that "it is impermissible to retaliate against them without verifying who is responsible for any incident, or to circumvent the principle of individual responsibility by using outlaw groups to carry out acts of violence and sabotage."

The statement stressed that "these practices are escalating popular discontent," warning of the potential for the situation to transform into peaceful protests against the current regime. It affirmed that the council would be among the first to support any peaceful movement to confront these violations.

The council also appealed to the international community, the United Nations, and its agencies to intervene urgently and directly to stop these crimes, hold the perpetrators accountable, and prevent their recurrence in the future.
