This phase of the campaign follows the historic appeal titled “Peace and Democratic Society” made by Mr. Ocalan on February 27 of this year, which reaffirmed the demand for a political solution to the Kurdish question. The campaign, titled “Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan—A Political Solution to the Kurdish Question,” now enters its third phase, calling explicitly for the right to meet with Mr. Ocalan.

In this context, ANHA Agency spoke with several residents of Tel Tamr to gather their views on the current stage of the campaign and the significance it holds in light of ongoing policies of isolation and alleged human rights violations on Imrali Island.

Resident Ibrahim Alou expressed unequivocal support for the campaign, emphasizing that Mr. Ocalan “enjoys broad grassroots support among diverse peoples and communities due to his emancipatory philosophy, which promotes the brotherhood of peoples and counters the authoritarian mindset of the Turkish state.”

Alou further noted, “For nearly three years, the occupying Turkish state has imposed severe isolation on the leader, barring both legal and familial visits. At the same time, it attempts to capitalize on his stature by dispatching delegations from parties such as the Equality and Democracy Party in an effort to contain growing public dissent over the deepening economic crisis in Turkey.”

He underscored that “the demand to meet with Mr. Ocalan is both a political and human right. He is not merely a detainee; he is a global thinker whose philosophical contributions are taught in various parts of the world. The isolation imposed on him constitutes both a legal and humanitarian violation.”

Leyla Raqi Eddin, another resident, stated: “As women of North and East Syria, we fully support this campaign. Leader Abdullah Ocalan liberated us intellectually and restored our dignity. We reject the continued isolation and assert that he has the legitimate right to meet with his family, as guaranteed by all international conventions and legal norms.”

She added: “Turkey is blatantly violating these laws while simultaneously claiming adherence to human rights. The lifting of Mr. Ocalan’s isolation should be the first step toward a comprehensive and sustainable peace.”

A Call to Demonstrate Genuine Intentions for Peace

Citizen Ali Mohammed Alou asserted that “Mr. Ocalan’s call for peace and intercommunal harmony must be met with a concrete initiative from the Turkish state, beginning with the lifting of his isolation and allowing him access to his family and legal counsel.”

He added, “To date, Turkey has shown no genuine intent in this regard, continuing instead to approach the Kurdish issue solely through a security lens. If the state is indeed serious about change, it must begin with a confidence-building measure.”

Alou also stated that “the release of Mr. Abdullah Ocalan is not merely a political demand, but a vital step toward achieving stability in the Middle East. He represents a key to resolving many of the region’s longstanding conflicts.”

Will Ankara Heed the Call?

As the international campaign calling for Abdullah Ocalan’s freedom gains momentum and global popular support intensifies, Ankara finds itself increasingly accountable before the international community and human rights institutions. The critical question remains: will Turkey respond to these appeals for peace, or will it persist in its policies of denial and repression?
