The U.S. Department of Defense’s chief spokesperson reported that two American soldiers were killed after coming under attack during a field mission in the city of Palmyra.

The Pentagon’s chief spokesperson, Sean Parnell, stated that two U.S. Army soldiers and an American civilian interpreter were killed, and three others were wounded.

According to the official, the attack occurred while the soldiers were conducting a meeting with a local leader. Their mission was part of ongoing support for operations to combat ISIS mercenaries in the area.

The U.S. Central Command also reported that two U.S. service members and an American civilian were killed and three others wounded in an ambush by a lone ISIS gunman in Palmyra, central Syria. U.S. forces engaged the attacker and killed him.
