The Qamishlo People’s Council, the city’s Education Directorate, and the al-Shahba Civil Council are scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss the situation of al-Shahba displaced people residing in 17 schools in Qamishlo.

The meeting will address the evacuation of the 17 schools housing the displaced people as the new academic year approaches. The three institutions are expected to present their proposals to one another in an effort to reach a solution to the ongoing crisis.

A total of 210 families displaced from al-Shahba are currently residing in the 17 schools in Qamishlo. Recently, the Education Directorate has asked the al-Shahba Civil Council to vacate the schools and find a solution for the displaced people ahead of the new academic year.

For its part, the al-Shahba Civil Council made clear it is unable to remove the displaced people from the schools, stressing that their primary demand is a safe and guaranteed return to al-Shahba.

Yesterday, the Qamishlo People’s Council and the Education Directorate gave the displaced people 24 hours to vacate the schools, following nearly two months of calls for their evacuation. However, the displaced people said they have nowhere else to go.

The upcoming meeting comes amid continued disagreement over the mechanism for evacuating the schools, as efforts are underway to reach an arrangement that addresses the situation of the displaced people while ensuring that students have access to the schools as the new academic year approaches.
