The pioneer of free media, Hussein Aykol, who was injured at his home in Ankara on October 14 and hospitalized due to a cerebral hemorrhage, passed away on New Year’s Eve. A memorial ceremony was held in his honor at the Yılmaz Güney Hall in the Çankaya district, attended by his family, comrades, colleagues from the free media movement, loved ones and friends, as well as the Co-Chair of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Tuncer Bakırhan, along with members and representatives of civil organizations and political parties.

Leader Abdullah Ocalan sent a message of remembrance for Aykol from Imrali Prison.

The message was read by Faik Özgür Erol, a member of the DEM Party delegation to Imrali, and stated the following:

“We feel profound sorrow over the passing of pioneer Hussein, and I extend my condolences to his family, the free media, and all his comrades, loved ones, and friends.

His final wish was to conduct an interview with me. This wish was precious and important to me. We had the opportunity to meet and conduct an interview in 1990, and had it not been for his sudden passing, I would have wished to see him again and speak with him.

He was an internationalist who devoted his life to revolution and struggle, a sincere and devoted individual.

He was an intellectual and journalist who represented the voice of truth, and an irreplaceable revolutionary. We have lost an international pioneer. Throughout his struggle, he was always a pioneer with his pen and stance, guiding us along the path, an ideal revolutionary.

To me as well, he was an unparalleled comrade in struggle, like Gurbetelli Ersöz and Sırrı Süreyya Önder.

The life of Hussein Aykol stands as a foremost example of the pursuit of truth and social responsibility. He represented the voice of truth against darkness and never submitted or surrendered throughout his journey in free media.

He sacrificed his life for the freedom of peoples and never hesitated for a moment in his struggle for equality. With steadfast faith, he did not abandon this banner until his final breath and did everything required in a manner befitting him.

His struggle, principles, and efforts will remain alive in the conscience and memory of this land until the end. We will follow the principles, ideas, struggle, and great efforts he left behind.

We will always keep his memory alive in our struggle.

Once again, we extend our condolences to his family, the free media, and all his comrades in struggle, friends, and loved ones.”
