Kurdish unity is considered a strategic necessity in confronting regional and international challenges and pressures, as division weakens the Kurdish position and opens the door to external interference. Achieving such unity requires overcoming narrow partisan interests and building a national project based on consensus, thereby strengthening political presence and improving negotiating power regarding Kurdish rights.

Mustafa Oso stressed that comprehensive Kurdish unity across the four parts of Kurdistan, founded on a unified national strategic policy, is of utmost importance in overcoming the state of Kurdish political fragmentation and division. He noted that the states dividing the Kurdish people seek to exploit these divisions in order to undermine the Kurdish national cause and prevent its development, especially amid current regional developments.

Oso added: “Internally, the main obstacle lies in narrow party interests and calculations, which are reflected in the tensions among Kurdish parties, whether within a single part of Kurdistan or across all parts. Externally, there are regional pressures, particularly from the states that divide the Kurdish people, as well as their influence over some Kurdish parties.”

Internal Disputes Must Be Overcome

The independent Kurdish rights advocate and politician explained: “To support the path toward Kurdish unity, Kurdish politicians — especially independents — must avoid being drawn into conflicts among Kurdish parties. They should prioritize the national interest over party interests, focus on common ground between Kurdish parties rather than their internal disputes, and work to build public pressure to push them toward overcoming their differences and unifying their ranks.”

Mustafa Oso believes that Kurdish unity would greatly improve the Kurds’ political standing, saying: “Kurdish unity is a strategic necessity to strengthen the Kurds’ negotiating position and guarantee their rights within the laws and constitutions of the states that divide them.”
