Iran sentences citizen to 2 years in prison for social media post

An Iranian court sentenced Elham Naderi, 32, from Ladeh Nodseh, a district of Horaman, and a resident of Marivan, Eastern Kurdistan, to two years in prison.

According to the Voice of Kurdish Detainees in Iran website, the sentence was handed down by the Revolutionary Court in Marivan, eastern Kurdistan, on charges related to her posting content related to the war between Iran and Israel on social media.

Security authorities in Marivan had summoned Elham Naderi during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel for posting on social media about the subject. During her interrogation, she was threatened before being temporarily released.

In late July, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sent a letter to the Speaker of Parliament demanding a plan to restrict virtual communication platforms, with the aim of silencing dissenting voices and tightening security controls on freedom of expression.

It is worth noting that, prior to this, Saeed Montazeri, Iranian police spokesman, announced that authorities had arrested approximately 21,000 people during the 12-day war with Israel and opened investigations into more than 5,700 electronic files.

It is also worth noting that, according to reports from human rights organizations in Kurdistan and Iran, 130 female activists were arrested, 232 others were imprisoned, and 41 others were sentenced to death in 2024.
