International Investigation Committee announces conclusion of its first tour in Swedia

Today, Wednesday, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria announced the conclusion of its initial visit to Swedia and its surrounding areas, stating that it has now left the country following a tour that included sites within the city and several neighboring locations.

In an official statement, the commission expressed its deep gratitude for the access provided and the facilitation of its mission, noting its anticipation for further field visits to affected regions, “provided that the necessary conditions ensuring the commission’s independence and methodologies are maintained, alongside respect for the confidential nature of its work.”

The commission conveyed its profound appreciation to survivors, witnesses, members of the affected communities, and their leaders who gave testimonies regarding suspected violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law. It clarified that it presented preliminary recommendations to address urgent human rights concerns to relevant authorities and stakeholders, while investigations remain ongoing.

The commission also expressed regret over the spread of misinformation about its visit, particularly via social media platforms, stressing that it does not announce any findings before concluding its investigations and has not issued public calls for testimony or contact numbers for the public. It urged reliance on its official website as a trusted source of information.

In conclusion, the commission affirmed that it will continue its investigations into violations in Syria, including through engagement with various affected communities and relevant stakeholders.

It is noteworthy that ANHA agency reported on October 3 that the international investigation commission had begun its fieldwork in Swedia governorate to investigate the violations and massacres that occurred in the city in mid-July.

During its tour, the commission’s delegation visited several villages in the devastated western countryside of Swedia, then moved to the town of Qanawat, where they met with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, head of the Druze Unified Sect. The delegation also held meetings at Swedia Hospital with witnesses and injured individuals from the events.
