On its first day, members of the Commission visited the town of Qanawat and met with the spiritual leader of the Druze community, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri. The Commission is expected to begin its field investigations in the coming days.

Sweida and its countryside witnessed intense clashes on July 13 between forces of the Interim Government and allied armed groups on one side, and local military units now known as the “National Guard” on the other.

The violence resulted in more than 2,048 deaths, including the field execution of over 200 members of the Druze community, in addition to dozens of kidnappings and disappearances.

The Interim Government had previously barred the Commission from entering Sweida, citing security concerns in the region and along the Damascus–Sweida highway.
