Interim Govt. changes schools' names, administrations refuse

The issue of education, its program, materials and syllabi to be developed is one of the key points of the January 29th Agreement. Discussions and negotiations on this topic are ongoing between Damascus and Rojava Administration, but the names of schools have recently entered the agenda.

Following the July 19th Revolution and the establishment of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, the education system in the region changed. School names that had been given during the Ba'athist regime were changed and replaced with the names of strugglers who martyred in the war against ISIS mercenaries.

With the signing of the January 29th Agreement, the Interim Government wants to change school names again. According to information, the government has proposed naming these schools after Kurdish scientists, writers, and intellectuals.

Students, teachers, and families of martyrs have expressed their rejection of this approach, and have been organizing events and protests for some time.

Lists from Damascus and the region

According to the information obtained by ANHA agency from sources within educational institutions, the Ministry sent a list of school names in Qamishlo to the city's school administration. However, the administration rejected the list sent by the Ministry of Education and, in turn, sent another list to Damascus.

The administration made some changes to the list of school names but retained the names of some schools that had been named after Kurdish and Arab figures during the Ba'athist regime's era.

The matter remains unclear, and the names have changed again

The issue of school names is still under discussion and remains unresolved, as meanwhile, government-run school exams are scheduled to begin in cities like Qamishlo (where ninth and twelfth grade exams are set to start on June 4th). For this purpose, the Ministry of Education sent out a list of schools where the exams would be held, but the names have been changed again.

In Qamishlo city, the name of the "Martyr Diyar" School has been changed to "Asad al-Din Shirkuh," the name of the "Martyr Shervan" School to "Sharaf Khan al-Badlisi-2," the name of the "Martyr Ferhad Kato" School to "Hettin" (the same name it had under the Ba'athist regime), and the name of the "Hassen Mahmoud Khalaf" School to "Uqba bin Nafe'."

The administration will reject it again

It is said that the school administration in Qamishlo city will also reject this list and submit its response. On the other hand, the discontent and protests of the area's residents regarding the school names' change continue.
