On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the founding of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), the spokeswoman for the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), Roxanne Mohammad, spoke to ANHA's agency about the change the units have brought about in the prevailing mentality in society, demonstrating the true identity of women, and the extent to which the units are able to reach all women.

The YPG’s spokeswoman congratulated the fighters, women, and all peoples aspiring for freedom, on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the founding of the YPG. She also congratulated them, at the same time, on the birth of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, which coincided with the day of the YPG’s founding (April 4).

Roxanne mentioned the value that April 4 holds for the units: “April 4 has great value and importance. On the one hand, it is the anniversary of the birth of the leader Abdullah Ocalan, who proposed and disseminated the philosophy of women’s liberation, and developed the philosophy of democracy and equality that illuminated the path of freedom for oppressed peoples, especially women.” Who seek salvation from slavery, patriarchal (male) mentality, and regimes that have always applied genocidal policies and plans to people and women.”

It is based on the philosophy of women's liberation

Roxanne continued her talk about the principles that the units follow in organizing their fighters: “This philosophy constitutes a basis and principle for the Women’s Protection Units YPJ to search for freedom. The units base their organization on the principles of women’s liberation and building a free and environmentally democratic society, and seek to become a force for society and for the peoples who struggle for their freedom, and from this standpoint, the units were formed that took the path of struggle and continue to follow it to this day.”

The history of women's resistance during normal society and up to now, the experience of Guerrilla fighters from the Free Women's Units - Star (YJA-STAR) on the mountaintops of Kurdistan, and the organization-based ideology in the face of all internal and external attacks, inspired the units to form, according to spokeswoman.

She explained that the units made up of the daughters of this people were subjected to many attacks, and she added: “But these attacks did not affect our resistance and our desire to inform women of their history and true identity and to show the reality of the free woman with will and existence.”

Changing the mentality and developing the intellectual and ideological aspects

“The units began their struggle on the basis of changing the mentality. In any revolution, if there is not sufficient knowledge from both the intellectual and ideological standpoints, the goals of the revolution will not be achieved, because the authoritarian regimes, with their dirty policies, try to distance the people from their essence and truth, and in order to return things to their normal order and organize the revolution. And building with this knowledge, we (YPJ) took over the reins and took it upon ourselves to liberate this people, and today we are witnesses to the gains that have been achieved thanks to the philosophy of leader Abdullah Ocalan.” With these words, Roxanne explained the units’ goals in changing the dogmatic mentality in society and spreading the idea of women’s liberation.

She added: “We began to develop the intellectual side and delve deeper into historical knowledge and women’s science JINEOLOJI so that we can protect ourselves (women as a whole) and our people against all forms of attacks.” Here she mentioned the role of intellectual academies in developing the training system based on developing the intellectual side, and said: “In revolutions, we must build free individuals filled with education and knowledge so that they can pave the way to a real struggle and achieve the desired goals.”

More professional

Regarding the specialized level of the units, Roxanne said: “We have become more professional in military specializations, and we have opened specialized academies where all female fighters join, with the aim of responding professionally to all attacks launched against the will of our people, both cognitively through training on the principle of sexual liberation, women’s history, JINEOLOJI and combating all forms of intolerance and gender bias, or militarily through tactics and principles of war,” noting that self-training also has a major role in developing the personality of female fighters in the units.

The goals of the Women’s Protection Units are many, as Roxanne explained, including combating all forms of violence against women, eliminating the inferiority view in which women were viewed, breaking stereotypes, and proving their will and ability in all fields, including the military field and raising weapons. What is the July 19th Revolution known as the revolution? Women are the best evidence that the units’ goals have been achieved.

The patriarchal system seeks to crush organized and conscious women

Regarding the targeting of women in North and East Syria, Afghanistan, Gaza and the whole world, the YPG’s spokeswoman, Roxanne, noted that the male regimes, led by the Turkish occupation state, are trying to weaken the people through the person of women, as they (the occupation state) are aware of the fact that women’s freedom is linked to the freedom of society, and my massacre. Paris I and II (2013-2022), which were committed against four leaders and vanguards of the women’s revolution, are conclusive evidence of the extent to which these regimes fear women seeking freedom, and for this reason they seek to crush organized and conscious women in order to keep peoples under the yoke of their control and colonialism.

“Women in Arab countries and Europe need to start organizing themselves.”

Roxanne believed that women in Sudan, Yemen, Libya, Gaza, and Ukraine need to start organizing themselves, as women did in North and East Syria, and she added: “These women can now protect themselves and their gender from any other time, by organizing themselves and building a global women’s unit to stand up to attacks.” If it is launched against us, targeting women in Afghanistan or Gaza is targeting me and all other women.”

She stressed the need for women to organize, unite, share research and experiences among each other in order to benefit from experiences, and resort to fundamental (self-) protection, and expressed her willingness “to share all the gains they have achieved with all women in the world, and to transform the twenty-first century into a century of women’s liberation.”

Close relationships

Regarding the extent to which women outside North and East Syria know about the Women’s Protection Units, Roxanne confirmed that close relationships have been built with women in Afghanistan, Europe, and Latin America, and pointed out that “how the units are formed and the resistance they have shown in the face of the attacks of ISIS/ Daesh and the Turkish occupation state is the focus of attention of everyone we meet in our visits and delegations visiting the region.”

The spokeswoman for the Women’s Protection Units, Roxanne Muhammad, confirmed at the conclusion of her speech: “We seek to transform the women’s revolution in North and East Syria into a global women’s revolution, and to share the resistance of the Women’s Protection Units with all women in the world, and to discuss how to build our own women’s system, and to protect This revolution turned it into a global revolution, and we were able to prove this with the “Women, Life, Freedom” revolution, which became famous throughout the world.
