HRW: Turkish bombing of infrastructure in NE Syria exacerbated suffering of the people

Human Rights Watch reported that Turkish drone attacks on NE Syria caused damage to vital infrastructure and led to water and electricity cuts to millions of people, noting that the residents of the region are already facing a severe water crisis and are now suffering under the weight of increasing bombardment, which exacerbates their suffering to obtain basic water supply.

The organization called on Turkey to immediately stop targeting the vital infrastructure necessary to implement the rights and well-being of the population, including power and water stations.

Adam Coogle, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said “By targeting critical infrastructure across NE Syria, including power and water stations, Turkey has neglected its obligation to ensure that its military operations do not exacerbate an already desperate humanitarian crisis in the region, people in Hasaka city and surrounding areas, already facing a severe water crisis over the past 4 years, are now bearing the increasing bombardment and destruction, exacerbating their struggle to obtain basic water supplies.

The organization pointed out that the recent strikes were not the first in which Turkey appeared to deliberately target civilian infrastructure, as air strikes in November 2022 also caused damage to populated areas and vital infrastructure.
