HRW calls for renewal of independent commission's mandate on Syria violations

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to fully renew the mandate of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria. In a statement, HRW researcher Heba Zayadin explained that the renewal of the mandate should be accompanied by clear support from the interim government, signaling its commitment to transparency, reform, and building trust in state institutions.

Zayadin, in an article published on the organization's official website, stated that Syria "is still going through a fragile transitional phase," noting that trust in state institutions remains out of reach for a significant portion of the Syrian population.

She pointed out that local investigations lack transparency, particularly regarding the accountability of government bodies, and added that serious violations continue, including identity-based killings during military operations in central Syria and the coast, arbitrary killings, and mass displacement in Sweida, as well as renewed fighting in the northeast.

Zayadin considered the work of the Commission in documenting violations, uncovering the truth, and recommending measures to enhance human rights protection "vital," noting that the Commission's findings have already supported criminal procedures and provided information to international courts.

While pointing out that Syria is experiencing a "critical moment," she stated that the decisions made today regarding accountability and monitoring mechanisms will shape the human rights and stability landscape in the country for generations to come.
