Helin Ümit calls for understanding leader Ocalan's vision for change

All 232 delegates participating in the 12th Congress of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (held between May 5–7 in the Medya Defense Zones) decided to end all activities conducted under the name of the PKK. During the congress, Central Committee member Helin Ümit gave a speech, in which she stated:

> “We cannot say why the ideology of the PKK has been the way it has from the beginning until now. It was formed under the conditions of the world and took on its character accordingly—it became what it is as a result of its own nature.

Let’s consider the situation at that time. The destruction of the state, history, or the plan had not yet reached this stage behind our ideology. As a result of the leader’s work, efforts, and initiatives, a new path was opened—separate from the nation-state system. A new path toward freedom was created. People must understand and adopt this properly. If we understand the leadership correctly and consciously, we will take part in the process with responsibility and depth.”

"A Struggle That Achieved Legendary Developments"

> “The PKK, since its founding, has developed and engaged in the struggle within a specific global vision. As the comrades have also mentioned, this struggle has achieved legendary developments. It opened a new road to freedom—a new hope for freedom not only for the Kurdish people but for all the peoples of the world. We have all benefited from this truth, and we have been—and still are—proud of it.”

"There Is a Need for Change"

> “Could this situation with the PKK have continued? This was evaluated after the process in the year 2000. There were conditions, reasons, and a basis for it. But a person must assess the phase they are currently living in based on the dilemma of success and failure. In today’s global context, changing political balances, scientific advances, and practical-technological developments are also evaluated.

The leader Apo said, ‘I am excited,’ and I too am excited by this. This phase has gone through many emotionally charged waves. It was a phase filled with anxiety, mistrust, and anticipation. As we stated in our report, the psychological and personal war was extremely difficult. In other words, it wasn’t a phase we experienced with direct feelings. But the leader says, ‘I am excited,’ and I see there is a need for change.
