On September 12, nine residents of Kobani were martyred in a fire that broke out at the city’s central prison, while 17 others were injured. The martyrs’ families and residents called for anyone found responsible for the incident to be held accountable under the law and without discrimination, with accountability procedures conducted under the supervision of judicial institutions.

In this context, Ayman Saleh Rashid, brother of detainee Aziz Saleh Rashid, who was martyred in the fire, said those who incited the incident must be held accountable.

He added that his brother and his fellow detainees rejected a decision by the Public Security Service to transfer them to Aleppo and set fire to their bodies in protest against the decision.

Rashid called for those responsible for the incident to be put on trial and expressed his confidence in the Kobani administration’s ability to hold them accountable.

Zahi Ali Ayoub, meanwhile, said Kobani residents are calling for those responsible for the incident to be held accountable. She stressed that the detainees were residents of the city and that their sentences should have been carried out there rather than in Aleppo province.

Zahi stressed the need to prosecute those responsible, regardless of their positions, through fair and lawful procedures.

Rudin Mohammed, for her part, said the incident caused immense pain among the city’s residents and that achieving justice and holding those responsible accountable are conditions for achieving peace and stability in society.
