The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported today that mercenary groups affiliated with the Turkish occupation have imposed exorbitant conditions and demanded exorbitant fees for forcibly displaced residents of Manbij to reclaim their confiscated properties.

The Observatory added that dozens of Kurdish families returning to Manbij were shocked to find their homes and lands seized by mercenary families, who refused to return them except in exchange for sums reaching $10,000 USD per house.

The Observatory quoted a resident who owns five houses in the city, but was asked to buy them back after being accused of supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), without any legal mechanism or competent authority to which he could appeal.

This comes amidst the ongoing suffering of displaced residents, who were forced to bear the burdens of displacement and rent homes in other areas, before some risked returning despite the dangers, violations, and absence of justice under the authority of the Turkish occupation and its mercenary groups.

The displaced people from the occupied Syrian territories are calling on UN and international bodies to assume their legal and humanitarian responsibilities, to set aside narrow political calculations and interests, and to pressure the Turkish occupation to withdraw from their areas along with its mercenaries, and to ensure their safe and dignified return.
