Emphasis on workers’ role, calls to safeguard their rights on International Workers’ Day

On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, on May 1, both the Democratic Society Movement in Derik city and the Union of Toilers, along with the Democratic Society Movement in Girkê Legê, issued separate statements.

Derik

In Derik, the Democratic Society Movement delivered a public statement in Freedom Square, with the participation of dozens of residents and workers, to emphasize workers’ rights and their leading role in society.

After observing a minute of silence, Samer Abdo, a member of the Workers’ Union Committee at the Semalka border crossing, read the statement, noting that “Workers’ Day is a moment of pride in the soldiers of production and labor across all fields.”

The statement added that “this day confirms that the worker is the cornerstone of any economic renaissance and the true guarantee for the sustainability and development of societies.”

It also pointed out that the occasion comes amid major changes and developments accompanying the people’s struggle for justice and rights, stressing the importance of renewing mechanisms of struggle to ensure continuous progress in achieving rights.

The statement concluded by emphasizing the continuation of developing and strengthening the tools of struggle to reach the goals for which the Kurdish people have long fought.

Girkê Legê

In Girkê Legê, the Union of Toilers, affiliated with the Democratic Society Movement, delivered a joint statement marking International Workers’ Day in Martyr Khabat Square. The statement was read by Nisreen Kindi, an administrator in the Union of Intellectuals in Girkê Legê, in the presence of a number of workers and local residents.

The statement affirmed that Workers’ Day represents a milestone in honoring the sacrifices of the working class and its role in building societies. It noted that workers in the region have continued to fulfill their roles despite war and siege conditions, through their commitment to labor and production.

It also stressed the need to empower workers and safeguard their rights to achieve social justice. It concluded with a call to reveal the fate of detainees held by the Syrian Interim Government and to release them unconditionally, considering this a fundamental step toward achieving stability.

It is worth noting that the Democratic Society Movement, the Union of Artists, and the Mesopotamia Movement for Democratic Culture and Art had planned to hold central celebrations in several cities of the Jazira region, as in previous years, to mark May 1. However, all celebrations were canceled in solidarity with the families of martyrs and detainees held by the Syrian Interim Government, and activities will be limited to issuing statements only.
