Earth bridge in Deir ez-Zor closed to traffic

Fayez Abbas, head of the Emergency Response Committee in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, announced that the "Earth Bridge" is closing to traffic starting this morning. The decision aims to "carry out necessary reinforcement and maintenance work on the bridge, as part of measures taken to ensure its safety."

According to the committee, the "Military Bridge" will serve as an alternative route while the Earth Bridge is closed, though heavy vehicles will be prohibited from using it. The closure comes amidst rising water levels in the Euphrates River.

Abbas had previously revealed that the volume of water entering Syrian territory via Jarabulus had gradually increased from 800 cubic meters per second to 1,300 cubic meters per second. Meanwhile, the flow toward Deir ez-Zor rose from 300 to 500, then to 600, and later to 725 cubic meters per second, with further cumulative rises in water levels anticipated.

The Earth Bridge is one of the crossings connecting the two banks of the Euphrates River in the city of Deir ez-Zor—specifically linking the Al-Hawiqa district on the western bank with the Al-Husseiniya district on the eastern bank—and plays a vital role in facilitating the movement of residents and vehicles between the two sides of the river.

The bridge is approximately 240 meters long and 6 meters wide; it was rehabilitated in July 2026—alongside the floating military bridge—following a period of river flooding
