Druze spiritual leader survives assassination attempt

ANHA correspondent reported that an assassination attempt on Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, failed.

She noted that the situation in the heart of Suwayda remains calm, with residents awaiting developments.

In this context, the Druze Spiritual Leadership issued a statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in the governorate, emphasizing that "the hands of peace remain extended" and reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and state sovereignty.

The statement clarified that the Spiritual Leadership has never opposed organizing the governorate’s affairs or establishing a local police force composed of honorable Suwayda residents.

However, it firmly rejects any "extremist, rogue, or lawless factions." The leadership stressed that the solution in the governorate must be peaceful and diplomatic, expressing confidence that the government in Damascus shares this stance.

It added, "Our relationship with the government has not been severed and will not be, and we believe in consensual solutions."
