Dozens suffocate as tear gas fired at protesters in Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh

Dozens of residents from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo suffered suffocation after Syrian Interim Government forces fired tear gas and live bullets indiscriminately at demonstrators.

According to reports from the scene, the interim government forces attempted to disperse residents gathered near the earthen barriers and checkpoints they had erected earlier in the day to block access to and from the two neighborhoods.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that security forces used live ammunition and tear gas against the protesters, causing numerous cases of suffocation among civilians, who were subsequently transferred to hospitals for treatment.

Residents from both neighborhoods — representing diverse social and community groups — had gathered at the checkpoints and barriers to voice their rejection of road closures and to demand that the roads be reopened.
