Today, Umayyad Square in Damascus witnessed hundreds of civilians taking to the streets in a demonstration to demand disclosure of the fate of about 9,000 members of the former regime forces, including about 2,000 members who were returned from Iraq to Syria after fleeing on the day the regime fell on December 8, while the rest were arrested at Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham checkpoints or during security campaigns. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory stated that the detainees were transferred to Adra Prison, Hama Central Prison, and Harem Prison in the Idlib countryside, in the absence of any official information about their conditions. According to the information, the "Military Operations Administration" refused to issue lists of the names of the detainees or allow their families to communicate with them, which angered the families and increased tension.

The observatory pointed out that the demonstrators raised banners demanding freedom for the detainees, and chanted slogans such as "Freedom for the soldiers... freedom for the prisoners." They also appealed to the head of "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" to work on settling the conditions of the detainees and releasing them, stressing the need to end the state of secrecy and guarantee the rights of the detainees.
