Damascus condemns Netanyahu’s visit to south, ignores Turkish occupation

At a time when the Syrian Interim Government is escalating its rhetoric against Israel following the Israeli prime minister’s visit to southern Syria, there is a notable absence of any comparable official response to Turkey’s ongoing occupation of northern Syria.

The Foreign Ministry of the Syrian Interim Government today condemned the visit carried out by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the ministers of defense and foreign affairs to the Syrian side of the disengagement line, where Israeli forces are deployed.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that Syria “strongly condemns the illegal visit by the Israeli occupation’s leadership to the south of the country,” considering the step “a new attempt to impose a fait accompli that contradicts the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”

Despite the Interim Government’s heightened rhetoric against Israeli actions in southern Syria, its official discourse offers no parallel stance toward the Turkish occupation in the north, where Ankara controls large swaths of Syrian territory. This silence comes amid local criticism accusing the Interim Government of a double standard in its political priorities.
