Components of Girkê Legê call for new constitution guaranteeing rights of all

Syria is currently going through a political phase that requires serious steps toward building a pluralistic democratic state that guarantees the rights of all its peoples and communities. Drafting a new constitution is considered one of the most important issues on the table, as it would serve as the basis for organizing political and social life and safeguarding freedoms and rights for all Syrians.

In this context, several residents from the different communities of Girkê Legê spoke to ANHA's agency. Citizen Salma Ibrahim stated that the Kurdish people had suffered for many years from marginalization and deprivation of their national and cultural rights under previous constitutions, noting that the current stage requires a new constitution that recognizes the rights of all communities without exception.

She added : “The Kurds, like all other peoples, have the right to speak their language and preserve their identity and culture. These rights must be clearly guaranteed within the new Syrian constitution, alongside guarantees for the rights of Arabs, Syriacs, Armenians, and the other communities present in Syria.”

She also stressed that the new constitution must guarantee women’s rights, freedoms, and participation in institutions and decision-making. She added:
“Women have proven their ability to bear responsibility and have made great sacrifices over the past years. Therefore, they deserve to obtain their full status and rights within any new constitution for Syria.”

For his part, citizen Sardar Omar pointed out that the current phase requires immediate preparations for drafting a new Syrian constitution that guarantees the rights of all communities and peoples in Syria. He noted that the Kurds have always been an essential part of Syrian society and have never called for separation, but rather have followed a path of democracy and coexistence among all components. He stressed that Syria needs a constitution that reflects the will of all Syrians and establishes a phase characterized by peace, stability, and justice.

He added: “The Kurdish people have suffered for many years from being deprived of their national and cultural rights. Therefore, the new constitution must include clear guarantees ensuring Kurdish rights alongside the rights of all other communities.”

Omar affirmed that Kurds have the right to speak and learn their mother tongue and to practice their culture freely, considering that recognizing the rights of all communities would strengthen Syria’s unity and reinforce coexistence among the Syrian people.

Meanwhile, citizen Wijdan al-Hasso stated that there is an urgent need to accelerate the drafting of a new Syrian constitution that reflects the aspirations of all Syrians and guarantees the rights of every community without exception, including Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, and Armenians, on the basis of equality, justice, and recognition of the country’s diversity.

She stressed that building a stable future requires a constitution that enshrines the principle of coexistence, prevents all forms of exclusion and marginalization, and establishes a pluralistic democratic state.

She also noted that building a pluralistic democratic Syria requires guaranteeing women’s rights and respecting their role, because any society that does not grant women their rights cannot achieve true justice and stability.

The residents of the city called for speeding up preparations for drafting a new constitution that guarantees the national, cultural, and political rights of all communities, considering it a fundamental step toward building a democratic Syria where everyone can enjoy security and peace.
