The Supreme Election Commission in Turkey granted the mayoral mandate of Van to the losing Justice and Development Party candidate in the local elections that took place on March 31, instead of the winning candidate of the Equality and Peoples’ Democracy Party.

After popular protests and legal objections, the Supreme Election Commission in Turkey re-delegated the mayorship of Van to the candidate of the Equality and Peoples' Democracy Party, Abdullah Zidane, who won the local elections in Northern Kurdistan and Turkey.

The joint mayoral candidates from the Equality and Peoples' Democracy Party received 55.48 percent of the votes. While the Justice and Development Party candidate received 27.15 percent of the votes.
