Numerous Arab and international media outlets responded to the visit of the Equality and Democracy of Peoples Party to leader Abdullah Ocalan on Imrali Island on December 28. This interaction demonstrated significant interest in the solutions the leader offers to the regional conflict and his proposals aimed at completing the peace process.

Negotiation Elements

The London-based Al-Arab newspaper noted that leader Ocalan's statements reflect a willingness for political dialogue with Turkish authorities, potentially paving the way for a breakthrough after years of political deadlock.

The newspaper also highlighted that the Kurds and the PKK possess additional and important negotiation elements, which allow them to actively leverage these factors and raise the ceiling of achievable results.

Leader Ocalan: The Man of Necessity for Peace and the Key to Lasting Solutions

Saudi Arabia's Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper described leader Ocalan as "the man of necessity" for peace in Turkey, affirming that the "Imrali Meeting" revives hopes for resolving the Kurdish issue.

Regarding this, the newspaper stated:

"Despite being imprisoned for 25 years, leader Abdullah Ocalan, the founder and leader of the PKK, remains 'the man of necessity' when discussing solutions to the Kurdish issue in Turkey." It added:

"Leader Ocalan's influence has not faded despite his imprisonment. Due to his significant impact on the Kurds in Turkey and the surrounding region, he has always been the key to resolving the Kurdish issue and its repercussions in Turkey during times of crisis."

A New Model for Peace

Germany’s DW Arabic highlighted that the party's statement conveyed leader Ocalan's readiness to contribute positively to a "new model" for peace. It also addressed the pressures faced by Kurds in North Kurdistan, where their regions have long recorded lower levels across most economic indicators, including per capita GDP, compared to the rest of the country.

The UAE-based Sky News network described the visit as significant and important, reflecting the extent of reliance on leader Abdullah Ocalan’s ability to end conflicts and push the peace process forward.

Peace Will Bring Great Benefits, but Previous Turkish Policies Do Not Inspire Much Optimism

Saudi Arabia's Al Arabiya network noted that achieving peace would bring significant benefits to Turkey by reducing the burden on its security forces, boosting the economy in the predominantly Kurdish southeast, and easing social tensions.

However, the network also referred to previous similar attempts, noting that two months ago, increasing instability in the Middle East and shifting political equations led to the first attempt to end the conflict between Turkey and the PKK. Nevertheless, the chances of success remained unclear, as Ankara had not provided any evidence of what such a step might entail.
