Al-Shaibani discusses agreements regarding Sweida crisis

Asaad Al-Shaibani, the Foreign Minister of the Syrian Interim Government, announced following a meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and the U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, that agreements have been reached to tackle the Sweida crisis.

In a joint press conference, Barrack stated that the cooperation between the Interim Government, Jordan, and the United States resulted in these agreements, though no further details were disclosed.

No official statements have yet been issued by the spiritual leadership in Sweida. However, Druze political figure Maher Sharafeddin stressed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the complete withdrawal from the occupied villages and the release of hostages are non-negotiable conditions. He affirmed that any step excluding these demands “would be incomplete and would not change the reality.”

Meanwhile, a military official from the Interim Government told AFP that their forces have withdrawn heavy weapons from southern Syria in compliance with an Israeli demand to establish a demilitarized zone along the border.

Last month, Safadi and Al-Shaibani met with Barrack in Jordan, where they agreed to form a tripartite working group to support ceasefire efforts in Sweida Governorate. Nevertheless, the Interim Government forces continue to violate the ceasefire on a daily basis.
