DEIR EZ-ZOR

On March 23, 2019, the SDF announced the liberation of the town of Al-Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, as the last stronghold of ISIS mercenaries. Since that time and for 5 years, service institutions in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of Deir ez-Zor Canton have been working to rehabilitate what ISIS mercenaries destroyed as a result of the war that the region witnessed.

The sectors in which work was completed and is still ongoing are services, health, education, and agriculture, and it was aimed at improving the infrastructure in Al-Baghouz.

Removing rubble and opening roads

Initially, attention was directed to removing the rubble, and the mechanisms that allocated 50,000 square meters for that purpose worked, opened roads, repaired water and sewage networks, and paved the roads, the most notable of which was paving the town’s 8-km-long public road, to facilitate the movement of people’s traffic, in addition to constructing and beautifying the entrance of the town.

Health and agriculture

In view of the need to pay attention to the general health of the population, and to provide a center that provides health services, including first aid and periodic vaccinations for diseases and epidemics such as leishmaniasis, a health center was opened, in addition to the renovation of 3 schools that receive students at various educational levels.

Because Al-Baghouz is an agricultural area on which the people depend, in addition to raising livestock as a source of income for them due to the availability of water from the Euphrates River, attention was given to the agricultural sector, and according to statistics recorded by agricultural directorates and committees, the area of agricultural land now amounts to 30 thousand dunums.

The work was directed towards rehabilitating an agricultural irrigation pump that irrigated 7 thousand dunums and put it into service, the work then moved on to rehabilitating another pump, work on which is still ongoing.

Paving roads and providing drinking water

In addition to paving the 8 km long public road connecting to Al-Baghouz, paving work took place on the People's Municipality road connecting to the public road, 1,300 meters long and 4.5 meters wide, during which the workshops working in the People's Municipality consumed 15,000 cubic meters of asphalt aggregate.

The Services Committee of the Eastern Region Council in Deir ez-Zor also worked to replace the damaged water networks in Baghouz, replacing them with 8-inch diameter pipes, up from only 4, and 4,300 meters long, benefiting 22,000 people.

It irrigates the neighborhoods of Al-Baghouz al-Tahtani, Al-Baghouz al-Gharbi, Al-Safafna neighborhood, and Hawija al-Khanafra neighborhood, in addition to the continuation of the rehabilitation work of the Al-Baghouz water station, where construction of chambers and filters has been completed, and studies are being conducted to create a funnel for water .

40% completion rate of infrastructure rehabilitation work

In addition to all these works, road lighting work continued inside Al-Baghouz, and the Services Committee worked to install lighting over a distance of 6,700 meters, distributed on the main street, Al-Shaaban, Al-Shraida, Dispensary, Al-Tahuna, Sheikh Ahmed, Al-Khalaf, Al-Mitlawin, and Al-Abyad Street.

Today, after 5 years, Al-Baghouz lives a new life away from ISIS mercenaries and their crimes, in which service works are being carried out aimed at developing various sectors. According to the work supervisors, the infrastructure rehabilitation rate has reached 40% amid the continuation of work.

From a social standpoint, life in Al-Baghouz has returned to normal since 2021, with the townspeople continuing to organize themselves into communes and neighborhood councils to manage their affairs on their own, and women in Al-Baghouz also organizing themselves within special women’s communes and committees within the Zenobia Women’s Gathering, and taking their natural place in managing town's communes and their institutions, after they were marginalized during ISIS control.
