Abdi meets families of Kobani prison fire victims, pledges accountability

Syrian presidential adviser Mazloum Abdi met on Wednesday in Kobani with the families of those martyred in the Kobani prison fire to discuss the repercussions of the tragic incident that occurred early last Saturday.

Abdi listened to the families’ demands and accounts of their suffering, expressing his solidarity with them.

Abdi confirmed that a special investigative committee had been formed to uncover the circumstances of the incident and gather evidence, paving the way for those responsible to be referred to the judiciary and held accountable in accordance with the law. He stressed that there would be no leniency in safeguarding the families’ rights and establishing the truth.

Kobani witnessed heightened security tensions early Saturday following a large protest condemning the killing of Sipan Hesso, a fighter with the Syrian Ministry of Defense. Then, several young men were arrested before tensions escalated within the city's prison following reports that inmates had been transferred to Aleppo, resulting in the death of nine prisoners and the injury of 17 others.
