A landmine left over from the war exploded today in Maarrat al-Sin village in the southern Idlib countryside while the two were clearing the rubble of a destroyed house in preparation for reconstruction, injuring both of them.

The injured were taken to a hospital in the area for treatment, amid the continuing risks posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance in areas that were devastated during the years of war.

The incident comes as residents have begun clearing rubble from damaged homes and renovating them in preparation for returning to them.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), explosions involving landmines, remnants and unexploded ordnance have killed 237 people since the beginning of 2026, including 142 men, 87 children and eight women, and injured 359 others, including 218 men, 130 children and 11 women.
