A spokesman for the Pentagon's Central Command, Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Eastburn, told AFP that "Maher al-Aqal" was killed while riding a motorbike near Janders in Syria, and one of his top aides was seriously injured.

Earlier today, local sources reported that an unidentified drone had targeted a motorcycle in the village of Khalta, in Janders district, in the occupied canton of Afrin.

In addition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights quoted sources that the leader of ISIS "Maher Al-Aqal" was present in the occupied areas of Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî, and he moved from there to the Afrin region in 2020, facilitated by the leaders of the "Al-Sharqiya Army" mercenaries, where he was a prominent leader in the mercenaries  ISIS during its control of the city of Raqqa.  He is the brother of the mercenaries Fayez al-Aqal, who held the position of the emir of the so-called delegated committee (wilayat administration) before he was killed in a similar operation in the city of al-Bab in June 2020.

The areas occupied by Turkey and its mercenaries have become safe areas for the leaders of ISIS mercenaries, as ISIS leaders Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi were killed near the Turkish occupation points in Idlib, in addition to targeting dozens of ISIS leaders in these areas.
