Qamishlo

This came during a press conference organized by the Health Authority on the health situation in the region, in the city of Qamishlo.

Dozens of doctors and health workers, as well as members of the Health Authority, participated in the press conference, in addition to the joint head of the Health Authority for the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria, Joan Mustafa.

During the press conference, the health authority's statement was read by the authority's co-chair, Joan Mustafa.

The statement touched on the reality of the health sector in north and east Syria and Syria in general, and continued: "Talking about the health sector in Syria in general and in the north and east of the country necessarily requires talking about the outcomes of the Syrian crisis and its direct effects on the health sector, which has been subjected to looting, and neglect. These new data greatly affected the citizens and the level of health care due to the sabotage of the sector’s infrastructure and the exposure of some of its institutions to looting by mercenary groups, led by ISIS.

The impact of the Syrian crisis on the health sector

The statement drew attention to the impact of the Syrian crisis on the health sector in the region, and said: "In the face of the tragic Syrian reality, whose bloody chapters we are still witnessing, our regions in north and east Syria were subjected to waves of terrorism, which in turn affected the health sector and received its share of looting and destruction terrorism and extremism Tens of thousands of northern Syrians sacrificed their lives to defend their dignity and the dignity of humanity, which was facing the threat of the spread of terrorism. About 27,000 people, both fighters and civilians, were wounded with varying degrees of severity, and more than 500 wounded suffer from critical conditions and need advanced treatment intervention, which unfortunately, we in north and east Syria miss."

He continued, "We cannot, as a result of the siege imposed on us, take our wounded out to receive the appropriate treatment at the right time, when the treatment is of benefit to the wounded.

The Health Authority in North and East Syria confirmed that, "with our limited capabilities, we secured an acceptable level of health care, and our preventive strategy in addressing the Corona virus had an important role in protecting our areas from the spread of the virus at a time when we were suffering from a lack of medical and humanitarian supplies in the required form and proportionate to the  population density in our areas.

Statistics of disease cases prevalent in the region

The statement also stated: "When we talk about this reality of ours, we must certainly not forget that we live in an interconnected world and its issues directly or indirectly affect countries and peoples, who may be geographically far from each other.  In our areas, they also affect us, as well as Turkey’s occupation of our areas, its threat to our people, its repeated targeting of civilians with drones, and a siege on us by closing the crossings.

The statement added: "During the past ten years, our regions witnessed the emergence of diseases that had been overcome and no longer existed previously, but in the ten years they have reappeared, and among these diseases are:

 Leishmaniasis has nearly 70,000 cases.

 Meninges

The number of cases of meningitis has reached about 1,000 cases only during the past month.

 Cancers

The number of cases of infection is about 5000 registered cases.

Kidney failure, the number of cases is about 3,500 cases.

The Health Authority confirmed that the narration of these statistics is to draw the attention of the world and the humanitarian and health authorities to the extent of the suffering faced by the health sector and citizens who, in most cases, need treatment outside the regions of north and east Syria, “and incurring expenses that exceed the citizens’ capacity in light of the difficult economic conditions, as there are people facing  death or looking at their loved ones and their children, as they wither day after day, unable to provide appropriate treatment.”

The attacks of the Turkish occupation hit the health sector in northern and eastern Syria

On the impact of the Turkish occupation army’s attacks on the health sector in the region, the health authority’s statement clarified that “the Turkish state’s threats against our regions, have not ended by occupying more Syrian lands, which will cause hundreds of thousands of residents to migrate from their places, commit massacres, and increase the number of wounded and martyrs, consequently the ability of the health sector to provide the necessary and emergency services to the injured, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of displaced children and women in the camps scattered throughout the regions of north and east Syria, who need health care.”

Politicizing the health and humanitarian file

The statement of the Health Authority in North and East Syria called on the “World Health Organization, international, European and regional humanitarian organizations and the international coalition to fight ISIS to contribute to the health sector and establish health investment projects, such as building pharmaceutical laboratories, laboratories, specialized hospitals, specialized centers for chronic and incurable diseases, and centers for training medical personnel. We also call on the above organizations and bodies.  Remind us not to succumb to political pressures and calculations and not be a partner in corruption and systematic theft of our regions’ share of humanitarian support, and depriving them of the required entitlement.  The health and humanitarian file serves its interests, and thus becomes a tool of the siege.”

In its conclusion, the statement stressed that the health reality, in light of the spread of diseases and the return of some previously remedied diseases, requires "a pause of conscience and conscience towards our besieged people in north and east Syria, who pay the tax for standing in the face of global terrorism and breaking its thorn."
