UNICEF met some of the children who are still being held in Ghweran detention center in Al-Hasakah, NE Syria.

UNICEF said in a statement: “At least ten days have passed since the children who lived in appalling conditions in Ghweran detention center, in which many of them spent years.

" Although some basic services are now available, the situation of these children is very precarious, the children should never have been there in the first place,” it added.

“UNICEF is now working to provide children with immediate safety and care to find long-term solutions for children urgently".

UNICEF praised efforts of the AANES in stabilizing the prison, and said: "UNICEF recognizes the efforts made by the local authorities to stabilize the situation inside and outside the prison, supporting the children is invaluable and must continue."

It emphasized on creation of a new safe place in NeE Syria to care for the most vulnerable children – some of them are as young as 12 years old.

Children should never be detained because of their association with armed groups. These Children should always be treated as victims of conflict. "

The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has demanded on many occasions that countries which have nationals in ISIS ranks to receive them, but the vast majority of those countries did not respond.

The statement by saying "It is time for work, as tens of thousands of children stranded in NE Syria, every day counts, repatriation of the stranded children is done slowly, and this is unacceptable.
