International Water Forum kicks off today in NES

 The work of the International Water Forum in North and East Syria will start at 10 am in the Sardam Cultural Hall in the city of Hasaka, under the auspices of the Local Administration and Environment Authority in the Jazira Region, with the participation of Rojava University and the Euphrates Center for Studies.

 Goals

 The forum aims, according to the Preparatory Committee, to "shed light on international charters, laws and agreements on water, draw attention to regional politics and the war on water resources exploitation in political and economic disputes, and present and discuss risks and challenges related to the issue of water security and achieving security and sustainable water development."

 It also aims to "demonstrate the economic, social and environmental impacts resulting from the unjust practices of the Turkish state, of its powers to control water resources in the region, with the aim of creating a water crisis. Through it, it can impose its political will on the rest of the parties. In addition to finding strategies for water problems in northern and eastern Syria."  attracting investments, exchanging experiences, and directing international organizations and forces to cooperate in facing challenges in the water sector.

 Participants

 Dozens of civil society institutions and international humanitarian organizations operating in north and east Syria, as well as human rights organizations and platforms concerned with the environment, will participate in it.

According to the forum program obtained by our correspondent, delegations and political figures ffrom the region and abroad, along with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, local associations and organizations, environmental bodies and experts in environmental affairs and local rights, will participate.

 Program

 The forum’s program indicates that its work will extend over two consecutive days, starting from this morning, and ending on the evening of tomorrow, September 28, according to 5 main sessions, starting with an opening speech by the Forum’s Preparatory Committee, a speech by the co-chairs of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, and a documentary bout the reality of water in the region.

The first day of the forum

 In addition to the speeches, three main sessions will be held during the first day of the forum, focusing on "international agreements and charters on international rivers and waterways, the political dimensions of the water crisis in the region, and the economic dimension of the water crisis."

 Each session will address four main axes, through specialized lecturers who, in the first session, will focus on “bilateral treaties and agreements signed between Turkey and both Syria and Iraq on the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the practices of the Turkish state to create water crises in the region, international waters and positive agreements on management.”  Shared aquariums and waters.

 The second session axes will highlight,  "the water war and international conflicts, the political repercussions of the water crisis on the security reality in the region, Turkey's use of international rivers as a political pressure card to impose its hegemony in the region, and water as a means of peace instead of violence."

In the third session, it will focus on "the role of water pollutants in influencing economic costs and economic growth, the main sources of economic demand for water, the direct effects of the water deficit on agriculture in the region, and the role of water security in achieving sustainable development."

 The activities on the second day

 The International Water Forum in North and East Syria is scheduled to continue its work on September 28, according to its programme, which will be held through two main sessions, the 4th and 5th, and concludes with results and recommendations from the participants.

 Each of the two sessions on the second day of the forum will deal with 4 main issues, centered on "the environmental impacts of the water crisis, the imminent disasters as a result of the deterioration of water security."

 In the fourth session, the lecturers, according to the program, will focus on "climate changes and their role in affecting water security in the region, how Turkey plans in the long term to use water in large projects in Turkey and its impact on Syria and Iraq, polluting international waters and its effects on biomedical systems."

As for the fifth and final session, the various uses of water and their impact on water security, the reality of the main water sources to achieve water security, the implications of the water deficit and the risks associated with it, water reserves, opportunities and solutions to achieve water security, will be highlighted.

 The International Water Forum in North and East Syria is supposed to end with a set of conclusions and recommendations that the participants will reach over two consecutive days.
