The statement read out at the headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Qamishlo City contained a statistical report on the number of displaced persons and refugees in north and east Syria, while calling on local, regional and international non-governmental organizations, UNHCR and the United Nations to assume their responsibility, particularly in north and east Syria, because of the blockade imposed on the region and to put an end to their suffering and tragedies.

The statement was delivered by the co-chair of the Human Rights Organization of Jazirah, Avin Juma, read as follows:

"We live in World Refugee Day, which was adopted by the United Nations in December 2000 and was first officially celebrated on June 20th, 2001. The United Nations has set this year's slogan for World Refugee Day:" Together we recover, learn and shine. "The slogan sheds light on the pandemic that has claimed millions of lives around the world, with more than 70 million refugees.

By defining this year, as well as the States signatories to the 1951 Agreements relating to the Status of Refugees, the United Nations is helping the refugee to succeed, not only to survive the war and crises, the crisis and war in Syria have been going on since 2011, leading to the escape of millions of their most powerful cities and homes in the past 10 years.

This was confirmed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who said: "The Syrian crisis is not the worst of humanity, but the most dangerous, as well as the risks of its extension and its negative effects to the States of the entire region."

Statistics confirm that the number of Syrian refugees to neighboring countries is nearly 2 million (75% of them women and children), 11 million people have crossed international borders into European countries, and more than 7 million have been internally displaced to other areas of their homeland.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie estimated:

Half of Syria's population is out of their homes in refugee camps or even homeless, and is exposed to health, social and psychological risks that have led many of them to lose their lives, especially children and women.

Dozens of Syrian camps house thousands of forcibly displaced persons from their homes and cities and live in the worst living conditions. Although we can count the number of refugees and displaced persons, we cannot describe their suffering and tragedy, they do not have the lowest standards of decent living and suffer from poverty, disease, lack of water and food.

We send our message to concerned parties, regional and international refugee organizations, in particular the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations, to assume their responsibilities, particularly in the north and east of Syria, because of the blockade imposed on them, and to put an end to their suffering and tragedies. We also call upon all civil society organizations to help reduce this suffering. "
