Mohammad Tarbush of the General Department of Dams in Northern and Eastern Syria told the Hawar news agency ANHA that the water level of the Euphrates river flowing into Syrian territory had not changed, and that Turkey had been blocking large quantities of Euphrates water from Syria and Iraq for more than 4 months.

Tarbush explained that the proportion of water intake from the Euphrates River is only 200 cubic metres per second, a small amount compared to that agreed by Syria and Turkey in 1987, whereby Turkey commits to release at least 500 cubic metres per second, of which Iraq receives 60 percent.

Turkey began locking up large quantities of the Euphrates River since 27 January, causing a catastrophic decline in the river's water level within Syria and Iraq.

The decline in the Euphrates water cast a shadow over several sectors, most notably the electricity, agriculture and drinking water sectors.
