On Thursday, April 22, Syria received nearly two hundred thousand doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, via the WHO's Kovacs program, which is the first shipment to arrive by the Kovacs platform.

According to the Health Authority of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, the vaccination process targets frontline health care workers in all parts of Syria, including the regions of North and East Syria.

About this, the co-chair of the Health Authority in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Joan Mustafa, told our agency that the amount of doses that reached Syria is very small.

200 thousand doses arrived in Syria

And he said, "It was supposed that about 900 thousand doses are provided, but due to some technical issues that occurred in the mechanism of making the vaccine, the number decreased to approximately 200 thousand doses only."

While another 53,800 doses were delivered to the occupied areas, which are still witnessing waves of displacement, as a result of inhuman and immoral practices by the Turkish occupation mercenaries against the people.

Mustafa added: "ways to deliver the vaccine to the regions of North and East Syria is still being discussed," stressing that part of the doses will reach the regions of North and East Syria as well.

priority

Regarding the target group, Mustafa indicated that the priority will be for health care workers, indicating that, according to the promises of the World Health Organization, the vaccine will be distributed to the entire health team in North and East Syria.

About the number of doses proposed to receive in the regions of northern and eastern Syria, Mustafa said: "In principle, we need nearly a million doses of the Corona vaccine, to cover our needs," as there are about 5 million people living in North and East Syria.

The second shipment

It is scheduled that about 700 thousand doses of the Corona vaccine will arrive at the end of May and early June of this year, to Syria, to cover the elderly and patients with chronic diseases as well, according to the World Health Organization.

As for the distribution mechanism, Mustafa explained that the World Health Organization will oversee the delivery and distribution of vaccines.

The co-chair of the Health Authority in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Joan Mustafa, touched on the health situation in the region, and the numbers of infections, saying: “The region witnessed a third wave of the Corona epidemic, and according to the scientific reports and research that were published, the wave began to recede somewhat.”

The Health Authority of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced in a press conference on April 12 that the noticeable increase in the number of cases of Coronavirus heralds an imminent humanitarian catastrophe.

On the other hand, Mustafa indicated that the cases of infection according to the chart are heading towards stability, and according to the plan, measures will be taken either to extend the decision to impose a total curfew or impose a partial curfew, in the coming days.
