​​​​​​​New U.S. sanctions on entities, persons affiliated with Damascus

On Tuesday, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 18 Syrian entities and persons affiliated with the Damascus government, most notably the Central Bank of Syria.

The Treasury statement noted that seven people and nine companies had been added to the sanctions' lists.

The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote on Twitter:

"The United States imposed sanctions on 18 individuals and other entities today for their support of the Assad war machine and obstructing efforts to end the Syrian conflict. We stand with the Syrian people and reaffirm our support for the peace path stipulated in Security Council Resolution 2254."
