Iraqi authorities announced that al-Qaim border crossing with the Syrian city of al-Bu Kamal will open on Monday, after it stumbled several times.

Iraq will open al- Qaim border crossing with Syria on Monday, the official Iraqi news agency said on Friday.

The agency quoted the head of the border passages, Kazem Mohammed Bressam al-Oqabi as saying that Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi agreed to open the port, added that al-Oqabi confirmed "the readiness of the port for the passage of passengers and also for commercial exchange."

The crossing on the Syrian side corresponds the Syrian town of al-Bukamal in Deir –ez-Zor city, which is controlled by Iranian forces, and the area witnessed several raids in recent period.

The Iraqi authorities postponed the opening of the crossing twice for the past and talked about logistical problems behind it, but sources confirmed that there is a lot of American pressure that led to the postponement of the opening.
